Learn about herbal teas that help reduce stress and cut down on cortisol production.

This week we're talking about how excess stress and anxiety can affect the body negatively. Specifically, we'll be looking at how, and why cortisol is produced, and a natural way to help combat excessive cortisol production.

What Is Cortisol?

To put it plainly, cortisol is the main hormone that gets released when the brain is stressed out, or experiencing high levels of anxiety. When cortisol is running amuck throughout the body, it causes our glucose levels to spike in the bloodstream.

How Cortisol Manefests

The most common sign of high levels of cortisol is stubborn weight gain that collects around the midsection. The weight can linger no matter how much you eat healthily and exercise. However, there are a number of other high cortisol symptoms including:

  • Acne

  • Swelling of the face

  • Slowed healing

  • Skin Thinning

  • Easy bruising

Herbal Remedies

We have compiled a simple list of herbal teas known to reduce stress and may help the body regulate high cortisol levels by targeting the root of the problem, stress, and anxiety, in a more holistic and natural way. Starting off with a tried and true Catalyst Tea Company favorite, lavender.

Lavender

The calming attributes of lavender are what the herb is best known for. Lavender can naturally calm down the nervous system by lowering your blood pressure. It's also a great anxiety deterrent, a natural sedative, and may even help to stave off depression.
