Learn about herbal teas and blends that alleviate headache pains
After a long day of running errands in the summer heat, or a car ride home from work in the sweltering weather, returning home with a pounding headache can unfortunately become the norm. So, this week we're looking at some herbal teas that help relieve headaches of all sorts.
Chamomile
The Chamomile flower has been a staple in herbal medicine for thousands of years. A member of the daisy family, the flower is an Old World native and has been used in many forms and practices to treat many ailments globally.
Chamomile is a natural anti-inflammatory, making it the perfect herb for reducing inflammation-based headaches, such as tension and stress. The flower contains an antioxidant called apigenin. Apigenin is what gives the chamomile flower its sleep-inducing and tranquilizing properties. The antioxidant works by binding itself to specific receptors in the brain that can decrease stress and help you sleep.
Lemon Balm
When combined with other herbs with calming attributes such as chamomile, lemon balm can help to settle the nervous system to help you sleep. It is also a great stress releaser and tension reliever.
Feverfew
Feverfew became the hot go-to migraine reliever in the 1980's. The leaves of the herb contain parthenolide. Parthenolide is a very small molecule that makes feverfew a bit stronger than chamomile when it comes to quelling a higher-grade headache.
Peppermint
For a refreshing welcome home drink simply let mint leaves steep in a pitcher of water while you're away from home. Mint helps to detox the body, reduce head pain, and promotes healthy weight loss.
Tea Time
This week we want to know what you do to practice self-care. Are you taking a little time out of your day to check in with yourself and see what's going on? Are you taking a soothing bath once a week? Let us know in the comments below!
